In the recent Discussion Draft of the Applicant guidebook, ICANN has given governments more influence on the success of new gTLD applications. Although it will be ICANN who approves an application, the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) may issue an early warning to the applicant. ICANN has decided to implement both the Trademark Claims Service and the Sunrise Period for all new gTLDs as mandatory Rights Protection Mechanisms (RPMs). In the last proposed final Version of Applicant Guidebook (12 November 2010), new gTLD applicants had the choice between offering Trademarks Claims Services or Sunrise Services. Both IRT and STI recommended a choice between these two rights protection mechanisms. Although few have publicly announced their intentions at this stage, hundreds of forward-looking companies are planning to acquire .brand TLDs corresponding to their trademarks.
