A domain extension for the Kurdish people and Kurdish language has been a vision of many pioneering networking and scholarly communities. Together with the support from several Kurdish communities, the dotKurd campaign is hoping to secure the .ku, .kur and .kurd top-level domain names for Kurdish communities on a cultural and linguistic as well as regional basis. Currently the organization is preparing a business plan and presentations that will be essential for a successful application with ICANN.
Mission
The mission of the .kurd campaign is to create a unique Internet namespace where Kurdish concerns can be represented. A new top-level domain would enable Kurdish individuals, organizations and businesses to communicate their ideas and beliefs easily to a wide audience.
About the Kurdish People
Comprised or more than 30 million members and inhabiting an area spanning several middle-eastern countries, the Kurdish people represent a community with a rich culture. Currently, the dotKurd organization is campaigning for a new top-level domain to represent this community and the Kurdish language, history and way of life.
Advantages
Likely the greatest advantage of a .kurd top-level domain is to create a sense of community among people within the Kurdish population. By appending a .kurd extension to a web address, website authors will be able to strengthen their ties to the Kurdish population. Because people that purchase a .kurd domain will need to prove an existing connection to the Kurdish culture, sites with a .kurd TLD will likely contain content concerning the Kurdish people thereby strengthening the meaning of .kurd domains overall. Furthermore, money used to purchase a .kurd domain will remain in the Kurdish economy and contribute to further growth. Also, a website's domain extension is one factor search engines use to return relevant search results; a .kurd ending could thus yield more relevant answers to searches relating to Kurdish topics.
