More than thirty green organizations and leaders are working together on a global bid for the .eco domain name ending. These individuals and groups believe that to be 'eco' means a real commitment to being green. The people supporting the .eco campaign are a global group of advisors, partners and stakeholders, working to create .eco's rules and request input as the project progresses. The .eco project is supported by Big Room Inc., a Canadian company based in Vancouver whose goal is to be a part of and help create the green economy, by making it easier for people to make choices based on ecological factors. They are life-long environmentalists and technology enthusiasts, having worked at the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), INSEAD Business School, Yale University, Institute for Sustainable Futures, the EcoDesign Foundation, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Mission

Although the .eco top-level domain doesn't exist yet, one day it will. When it does, millions of companies and people around the world will be able to buy .eco domain names and use them to illustrate that they are 'green' or 'eco-friendly'. That's both an opportunity, and a challenge primarily because many people are confused about what makes something green. A recent UK study showed that 70% of consumers have a difficult time identifying green companies. At the same time, more than ever, companies want to prove they are green. They want to create green jobs, sell green products to consumers, and feel good about their work. This is where .eco will be of use. With a .eco domain name, environmentally conscious consumers be able to find green companies quickly and easily. A simple '.eco' tag on every green website, email and business card could say it all.
