ICANN has recently announced that the application window for new generic top-level domains will open on January 12, 2012. Towards the end of 2012, ICANN expects to add another 400 generic domain extensions to the current list, creating an unprecedented growth of new top-level domains.

Over 100 groups have already announced their intention to apply for a new TLD. The introduction will open the Internet to a new realm of choice, offering opportunities for businesses, communities, and Internet users to create digital identities and manage their online branding through domain names.

The Munich Conference on new Top-Level Domains is designed to address the needs of all parties interested in nTLDs, and provides excellent networking opportunities for nTLD applicants.

In November 2000, the ICANN board approved the addition of the first round of seven new top-level domains. Since then, new top-level domains such as .info, .asia, and .tel have been added. While the introduction of new TLDs is eagerly anticipated, the success of a TLD is highly dependent on successful marketing and a long-term business strategy. The accreditation of a substantial number of large registrars is vital.

The simultaneous introduction of so many new TLDs poses unique challenges for applicants (registries), brand owners and future domain name owners. While most parties are eager for a new TLD round to start, it is important to learn from previous TLD launches in order to achieve long-lasting and continuous demand over time.
